Beeper audio

Audio produced through a basic internal speaker or buzzer.

Beeper audio is sound produced by a basic internal speaker or buzzer, usually with very limited fidelity. Instead of full digital audio, the device emits simple tones, clicks, or short patterns. This kind of output is common in embedded systems, older PCs, and firmware-level diagnostics where the hardware only supports on/off sound control.

In cyber security, beeper audio matters because it can work before the operating system loads, with almost no software dependencies. Defenders use it for POST error codes, tamper alerts, and fault signaling on appliances or lab gear. Attackers can abuse the same channel as a covert signal path, especially on air-gapped systems, by turning beeps into encoded data or commands. Its simplicity makes it easy to overlook, but that also makes it useful wherever a small, reliable, low-level output is needed.
