Bed leveling

Setting the print surface so the first layer stays evenly spaced across the build area.

Bed leveling is the process of setting the printer’s build surface so the nozzle stays the right distance from the bed across the entire print area. The goal is a first layer that is evenly squashed everywhere, which helps plastic stick correctly and gives the rest of the print a stable foundation.

It matters because most print failures start on the first layer. If the bed is too high in one area, the filament will not adhere well; if it is too low, the nozzle can scrape the surface or block material flow. In practice, bed leveling can be done with manual knobs, paper tests, or automatic probes that map small height differences and compensate for them. Even on printers with automatic leveling, understanding the underlying adjustment helps users diagnose warping, adhesion problems, and uneven prints.
