Batch script

A text-based Windows script that automates commands and can be abused for malicious execution.

A batch script is a plain-text Windows file, usually with a .bat or .cmd extension, that runs a sequence of commands through cmd.exe. It is used for routine administration tasks such as file management, software setup, and system checks. Because it relies on built-in Windows tools, a batch script can be simple, portable, and easy to execute without extra software.

In cyber security, batch scripts matter because attackers can abuse them to launch payloads, chain commands, disable protections, or perform low-noise execution that blends into normal administration. They often appear in intrusion chains as droppers, loaders, or lightweight backdoors, especially when an operator wants to reduce malware size and avoid obvious binaries. Defenders should watch for unusual batch execution, suspicious parent-child process relationships, hidden scripts in user-writable locations, and commands that download files or invoke PowerShell and other native tools. Batch scripts are not malicious by nature, but they are a common way to turn ordinary Windows behavior into an attack path.
