Banking fraud

Fraud aimed at stealing credentials, approvals, or transaction value from financial accounts or apps.

Banking fraud is cybercrime aimed at stealing financial value from bank accounts, payment apps, or online banking sessions. Attackers may capture credentials, intercept one-time approvals, manipulate transactions, or abuse remote access to authorize transfers as if they were the victim. On mobile devices, banking fraud often overlaps with spyware and credential theft because the same malware can watch the screen, read notifications, and trigger payments.

It matters because the damage is not limited to stolen passwords: a successful attack can lead to unauthorized transfers, account takeover, or fraudulent approvals that look legitimate to the bank. Defenders look for suspicious app overlays, abused accessibility features, unusual device behavior, and transaction patterns that do not match normal user activity. In modern mobile threats, banking fraud can also be paired with local relay or peer-to-peer techniques, allowing stolen data to move through nearby compromised devices when the infected phone has limited connectivity.
