Backup sync

an automated process that copies data between services or devices for recovery.

Backup sync is an automated process that copies data between services or devices so it can be recovered later. It is common in cloud storage clients, mobile apps, endpoint tools, and enterprise backup platforms. Unlike a simple upload, a backup sync usually tries to keep sources and copies aligned over time, reducing manual work and lowering the chance of forgotten files.

In cyber security, backup sync matters because recovery is only as strong as the last successful copy and the path used to restore it. Attackers often try to delete, encrypt, or poison backups to block recovery, while defenders use isolated or versioned syncs, access controls, and restore tests to make sure copies remain usable. A sync feature can also become a hidden dependency: if the service changes, fails, or is misconfigured, users may discover too late that their recovery plan depended on one automated path.
