Backup and restore testing is the practice of proving that backups can be recovered successfully, not just stored. It usually includes restoring files, databases, virtual machines, or configuration data into a test environment and checking integrity, completeness, permissions, and recovery time. This matters because a backup that cannot be restored is operationally useless.
In cyber security, these tests help defenders recover from ransomware, accidental deletion, corruption, hardware failure, or bad updates. They also expose hidden problems such as missing dependencies, expired keys, broken scripts, or backups that are encrypted, incomplete, or too old. In manufacturing and ERP environments, restore testing is especially important because planning, inventory, identity, and scheduling data may be needed to restart operations. Regular, documented restore drills turn backups from passive storage into a real resilience control.
