Backsourcing is the process of bringing outsourced software development back into the company so internal teams can control the codebase, delivery process, and governance. It is more than a staffing change: the organization takes ownership of source control, build systems, dependencies, secrets, and release approvals.
In cyber security, backsourcing matters because it changes who can modify software and how those changes are verified. A weak transition can expose the software supply chain through missing documentation, loose permissions, or untrusted CI/CD steps. Defenders use protected repositories, code review gates, artifact integrity checks, and staged rollouts to keep control during the handoff. In real operations, backsourcing is often chosen when a company wants stronger auditability, better incident response, and a more consistent security model for enterprise customers.
