Background activity is app behavior that continues while the user is not consciously aware of it. In cyber security, this can include network requests, sensor access, ad loading, scrolling, clicking, or data collection that happens after the visible screen looks idle. It matters because malicious or abused apps can hide actions inside routine use, making suspicious behavior harder to notice.
Attackers use background activity to generate fake ad traffic, refresh sessions, or collect telemetry without obvious user interaction. Defenders look for repeated patterns such as steady requests, unexplained CPU or network use, and interactions that do not match real reading or browsing. In mobile fraud cases, background activity can make scripted engagement look like normal app use, which distorts analytics and wastes ad spend.
