AWSCompromisedKeyQuarantine

An AWS-managed policy that restricts risky actions after a key is treated as exposed.

AWSCompromisedKeyQuarantine is an AWS-managed policy used to quarantine an IAM access key or related identity after it is treated as exposed. When attached, it removes or blocks many actions that could help an attacker, such as creating new credentials, changing permissions, or launching resources. It is a containment control, not a fix for the exposure itself.

This matters because leaked long-lived AWS keys can be used quickly for persistence, privilege escalation, and cloud abuse. In real defenses, the policy may be applied after secret scanning, partner notifications, or internal incident response detects a public leak. For defenders, it buys time by shrinking the attacker’s window, but it should be paired with immediate key rotation, credential removal, and review for suspicious API activity. The broader lesson is that exposed cloud secrets can trigger provider-side lockdowns, not just local cleanup.
