AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format built for high compression efficiency, so websites can serve smaller image files without losing much visual quality. It is commonly used in browsers and web frameworks that automatically optimize images for speed and bandwidth savings.
In cyber security, AVIF matters because it is not just “an image.” It is structured data that must be parsed and transformed by image-processing code. That makes AVIF part of the attack surface when applications accept remote or user-supplied images and pass them into server-side optimization pipelines. If the parser or conversion path is flawed, an attacker may trigger crashes, memory corruption, or, in severe cases, remote code execution. Defenders should treat AVIF handling like any other untrusted input path: patch image libraries and frameworks, limit automatic processing where possible, and test deployments that enable AVIF optimization, especially on specific host platforms.
