Autonomous Completion Rate

An article-proposed metric for the share of eligible tasks finished correctly without human intervention.

Autonomous Completion Rate is a proposed operational metric for the percentage of eligible tasks that an automated system completes correctly without human intervention. It is used to measure not just whether a tool acted, but whether it finished the right work to an acceptable standard.

In cyber security, this matters because automation often handles repetitive tasks such as alert triage, ticket enrichment, account containment, and policy enforcement. A high autonomous completion rate can reduce analyst workload and speed response, but only if reversals, escalations, and errors stay low. If the metric is not tracked, teams may believe automation is helping while it quietly creates extra review work or incorrect changes. Defenders use it to compare manual and automated workflows, detect process drift, and justify where human approval is still required. In attacks, the same idea can describe malicious automation that completes many steps independently, making abuse faster and harder to interrupt.
