Automatic backup is a feature that copies files, photos, or device data to cloud storage without requiring a manual upload each time. It is useful because it protects against loss from device failure, theft, accidental deletion, or malware. In security terms, it changes the recovery model: the backup becomes a second copy of important data that can be restored quickly when the original is unavailable.
It also creates new risks. If an attacker takes over the cloud account, they may reach sensitive backups, delete them, or use them to exfiltrate personal data. Ransomware and other destructive attacks often try to damage backups first, because recovery is the victim’s best defense. To reduce exposure, users should protect backup accounts with strong passwords, multifactor authentication, device security, and careful sharing controls. Encryption and versioning also help preserve data integrity.
