Authentication Hash

A cryptographic representation of a secret used to verify credentials without storing plaintext passwords.

An authentication hash is a cryptographic digest derived from a secret such as a password. Systems compare the stored or presented hash value instead of keeping plaintext credentials, which reduces the damage if a database or management interface is exposed.

In cyber security, hashes matter because they can become targets themselves. If an attacker steals an authentication hash, they may try offline cracking by testing guesses against the captured value without triggering login alerts, lockouts, or rate limits. Depending on the design, a hash may only help validate a credential, or it may be reusable as part of an attack. Defenders reduce risk by protecting hash stores, using strong hashing and salting, and keeping management interfaces off the public internet whenever possible.
