Authentication activity is the record of login attempts, successful sign-ins, password resets, multi-factor prompts, token use, and other identity checks on a system. It shows who tried to access an account, when they did it, from where, and whether the attempt was accepted or blocked. In security work, this data is one of the fastest ways to spot suspicious access.
Attackers often leave clues in authentication logs before or after a breach: repeated failed logins, impossible travel, logins from unusual countries, use of old credentials, or access at odd hours. Defenders review authentication activity to confirm whether a claim, alert, or user report matches real system behavior. Combined with system and configuration logs, it helps identify brute-force attacks, credential stuffing, account takeover, and lateral movement.
