Authenticated RCE

A remote code execution flaw that requires a valid login before the vulnerable path can be reached.

Authenticated RCE means a remote code execution flaw that can only be reached after a user logs in or presents valid credentials. Instead of attacking an open endpoint, the attacker abuses a feature available to an authorized account, then triggers server-side code execution through a vulnerable parser, upload workflow, plugin, or admin function.

This matters because login requirements reduce exposure, but do not make the bug harmless. If an attacker steals credentials, abuses a low-privilege role, or reaches a dangerous processing path, they may run commands, plant web shells, or take over the host. Defenders look for these issues in file-conversion stacks, document handlers, and privileged admin features. Good defenses include patching quickly, enforcing least privilege, isolating risky services such as converters, restricting upload formats, and monitoring authenticated actions for unusual file handling or process execution.
