Audit risk

The possibility that evidence, controls, or documentation may not satisfy an audit requirement.

Audit risk is the possibility that an organization’s evidence, controls, or documentation will not satisfy an audit requirement. It can arise when a required process is missing, does not work as intended, or cannot be demonstrated with reliable records.

In cybersecurity, audit risk matters because policies alone do not prove that safeguards operate in practice. For vendor remote access, an organization may need to show who connected, how access is controlled or disabled, and whether suspicious communications are detected. Access inventories, session logs, alerts, and tested procedures can help provide that evidence. Gaps between written plans and actual configurations may create audit concerns, even without a confirmed security incident or compliance failure.
