Attribution risk is the chance that viewers will wrongly connect content to a person, campaign, or organization. In cyber security, it matters because attackers often rely on misdirection: a fake post, altered image, cloned voice, or forged document can look like it came from a trusted source. If the audience believes the wrong source, the message can spread faster than verification can catch up.
This risk appears in phishing, influence operations, impersonation scams, and synthetic media. Defenders reduce it by checking provenance, reviewing account and file history, validating source assets, and using content credentials or internal approval logs. Rapid disclosure also helps when media is AI-generated or materially edited. The goal is not only to detect fabrication, but to prove who created the material, who approved it, and whether it has been altered. Strong attribution controls protect trust, which is often the real target of the attack.
