Attack validation

The process of checking whether a vulnerability is present, reachable, and exploitable in a specific environment.

Attack validation is the process of checking whether a vulnerability is actually present, reachable, and exploitable in a specific environment. It goes beyond reading a CVE or severity score and asks a more practical question: can an attacker really use this flaw against the systems you run, with your configurations and network controls?

This matters because vulnerability alerts often overstate or understate real risk. A weakness may exist in software but be unreachable behind segmentation, authentication, or compensating controls. The reverse is also true: a lower-scoring flaw can become urgent if it is exposed on an internet-facing service. Defenders use attack validation to test versions, confirm exposure, review logs, and look for signs of abuse, helping them separate not affected, susceptible, and compromised assets. In real defense work, attack validation turns raw vulnerability data into evidence-based remediation priorities.
