Argument handling

The way a program receives and passes command-line parameters, critical for safe automation.

Argument handling is the way a program receives, parses, and forwards command-line parameters. In safe code, each value stays separate as an argument rather than being rebuilt into a shell string. That distinction matters because shells and helper tools may perform word splitting, glob expansion, or option parsing if input is handled carelessly.

In cyber security, weak argument handling can lead to command injection, option smuggling, or broken automation when filenames contain spaces, quotes, dashes, or other unusual characters. Attackers often look for scripts that concatenate untrusted input into commands; defenders reduce risk by passing arguments directly, using arrays or exec-style calls, adding -- before file paths, and testing edge cases. Good argument handling makes bulk jobs, incident-response scripts, and admin tools more predictable and harder to abuse.
