Arc-rated PPE is protective clothing and equipment tested to resist the heat and pressure of an electrical arc flash. Typical items include flame-resistant garments, face shields, gloves, balaclavas, and eye protection. The arc rating tells workers how much incident energy the gear can help withstand before severe burns are likely.
In cyber security, arc-rated PPE matters wherever security work overlaps with energized systems: data centers, telecom rooms, industrial control panels, solar arrays, and other OT environments. Attackers, faults, or unsafe changes can leave equipment unexpectedly live, so incident responders and maintenance teams may need PPE while isolating power, verifying de-energization, or investigating tampering. PPE reduces injury risk, but it does not make a hazardous system safe; lockout/tagout, voltage verification, and proper work procedures are still required.
