AR

augmented reality, digital content layered onto the physical world.

Augmented reality (AR) overlays digital content—such as labels, graphics, or interactive objects—onto a view of the physical world, often through a phone camera or headset. Unlike virtual reality, AR keeps the real environment in view while adding computer-generated elements.

AR systems rely on sensors, cameras, location data, and software to interpret surroundings. In cyber security, compromised apps or devices could misuse sensitive camera or location access, expose captured data, or display misleading overlays that influence a user’s actions. Defenses include installing trusted software, limiting permissions, keeping devices updated, and validating digital instructions before acting on them. Sensor errors and obstructed views can also reduce accuracy, so AR interfaces should not be treated as authoritative when safety or security decisions depend on them.
