Application-Specific Password

A credential used by older apps or devices that may not follow the organization’s standard MFA flow.

An application-specific password is a credential created for a particular app or device, often to support older software that cannot complete an organization’s usual multi-factor authentication (MFA) process. It may provide access without the normal second-factor prompt, depending on how the account and service are configured. It does not mean MFA itself has been broken; it is a separate access path that can weaken protections if left unmanaged.

In real attacks, a stolen or exposed application-specific password may let an attacker access email or another connected service while bypassing the standard MFA flow. Defenders should inventory these credentials, restrict them to necessary apps, revoke unused ones, and monitor their creation and use where logs allow. Strong account hygiene and clear policies help reduce the risk posed by legacy access.
