Application passcode

A separate password issued for app or device access, often usable outside the main login flow.

An application passcode is a separate password created for a specific app, device, or client connection. It is often used when the main account uses multifactor authentication, and the app cannot complete the normal login flow. Because it is intended for one service or device, it can bypass interactive prompts such as a browser-based approval or a time-based code.

In cyber security, application passcodes matter because they can extend an attacker’s access even after the primary password is changed. If criminals steal one from a mailbox, password vault, or login session, they may keep syncing mail or connecting through legacy clients without needing the user’s full sign-in. Defenders should treat them as sensitive secrets: inventory where they are issued, restrict their creation, log their use, and revoke them quickly after suspicious activity. Monitoring unusual app-password creation or authentication from unfamiliar clients can reveal account abuse early.
