AppleDouble

A legacy Apple file format used to carry Macintosh-specific data and resource information.

AppleDouble is a legacy Apple file format used to store Macintosh-specific metadata separately from the main file data. It was designed for compatibility when files moved between classic Mac systems and non-Mac filesystems or network shares. An AppleDouble file can hold resource forks, Finder information, and other metadata that normal filesystems may not preserve.

In cyber security, AppleDouble matters because legacy container logic often increases parser complexity and creates edge cases. Any software that imports, previews, archives, or syncs these files must correctly handle both the data and the metadata records. Malformed AppleDouble content can be used to test for input-validation mistakes, memory-safety bugs, or unexpected file parsing behavior. Defenders reduce risk by patching file-handling libraries, restricting untrusted uploads, and stripping or normalizing metadata before processing content.
