API session

A valid authenticated connection to an application programming interface used for device management.

An API session is a valid authenticated connection to an application programming interface. In device management, it is the state that proves a caller has already passed authentication and is allowed to issue management requests. Sessions may be created with cookies, bearer tokens, signed requests, or other credentials, and they often carry privileges such as reading status, changing settings, or running maintenance commands.

API sessions matter because they define the trust boundary for administrative functions. If an attacker can steal, guess, or bypass session creation, they may gain the same control as a legitimate operator. In real attacks, flaws such as authentication bypass, session fixation, weak token handling, or command injection in a management API can turn an untrusted request into a privileged one. Defenders protect API sessions with strong authentication, short lifetimes, token validation, least privilege, logging, and network segmentation around management interfaces.
