API service data is the information exchanged between software systems through application programming interfaces (APIs). It can include request and response payloads, identifiers, transaction details, status messages, and other operational records used by a service to function. In a retail back-office platform, that data may reflect inventory, pricing, customer accounts, or financial activity.
This matters in cyber security because APIs often expose structured data at machine speed and may bypass the protections applied to normal user interfaces. If an API is weakly authenticated, overly permissive, or exposed without proper controls, attackers can collect large volumes of sensitive information or infer how internal systems work. Defenders reduce risk by enforcing strong authentication, least privilege, input validation, rate limiting, encryption, and careful logging and monitoring of API traffic.
