Annotation

A meeting feature that lets participants draw or mark up shared content.

Annotation is a meeting feature that lets participants draw, highlight, or write on shared content such as a screen, slide deck, or whiteboard. It is designed to make collaboration faster, but it also means the conferencing client must accept and process input from other people in real time.

In cybersecurity, that matters because annotation expands the attack surface of a collaboration tool. If the feature handles markup, rendering, or network messages unsafely, an attacker may abuse it to crash the app, manipulate what others see, or even trigger code execution on a participant’s device. Defenders treat annotation as a trust boundary: they disable it when unnecessary, restrict it to the content owner or host, and keep clients patched. Like chat, file sharing, and screen sharing, annotation is convenient only when its permissions and input handling are tightly controlled.
