Android Automotive OS is Google’s in-car operating system that runs directly on vehicle hardware. It is not the same as phone projection features such as Android Auto, which mirror a phone into the dashboard. Because it lives on the vehicle itself, Android Automotive OS combines app execution, system services, and vehicle-facing interfaces in a single platform.
For cyber security, that matters because a compromise can go beyond infotainment. Attackers may abuse apps, weak permissions, or vulnerable system components to gain persistence, relay traffic, or pivot into broader network abuse, such as proxy botnets. Defenders look for strong app sandboxing, signed updates, restricted debug access, and unusual outbound connections. Investigations also focus on privilege level: malware stuck in app space is far less dangerous than code that reaches privileged vehicle components or interfaces.
