Alternative site

A secondary location prepared to support operations if a primary site cannot be used.

An alternative site is a secondary location prepared to support operations if the primary site cannot be used. It may be a hot, warm, or cold site, depending on how much equipment, data, and staff readiness are already in place. In business continuity planning, the goal is to keep essential services running when the main office, data center, or cloud-connected operations are disrupted.

In cyber security, alternative sites matter because attacks and outages often hit availability first. Ransomware, destructive malware, power loss, fire, floods, or network failures can make a primary environment unusable. A well-designed alternative site reduces single points of failure and gives defenders a place to restore systems, validate backups, and resume critical work. It only helps if it is tested, reachable, and isolated enough to avoid the same compromise. For that reason, security teams treat alternative sites as a practical recovery control, not just a planning document.
