Alternative payments

Payment methods that operate outside a platform’s default billing flow.

Alternative payments are payment methods that bypass a platform’s default billing flow. In app ecosystems, that can mean using a developer’s own checkout page, a third-party processor, or another approved route instead of the store’s built-in purchase system. The key point is that money movement happens outside the platform’s standard controls, even if the app is still distributed through the platform.

From a security perspective, alternative payments expand the trust boundary. More payment paths mean more places for phishing, fake checkout pages, invoice fraud, and confusing redirects. Attackers may imitate legitimate billing screens or support pages to capture credentials or card data. Defenders should verify payment destinations, keep branding and user prompts consistent, monitor for lookalike domains, and review signing and identity checks around app installs and in-app links. In practice, alternative payments are not insecure by default, but they require stricter validation because users can no longer rely on one fixed billing interface.
