Algorithms are the rules, procedures, or machine-learned models a system uses to decide what to show, what to hide, and in what order. In search engines, social platforms, and AI assistants, these systems rank content by signals such as relevance, popularity, freshness, and user behavior.
They matter in cyber security because algorithms shape visibility and trust. Attackers try to game them with search engine manipulation, spam, fake engagement, or prompt and content poisoning so harmful pages look more authoritative or appear first. Defenders rely on algorithms too, using them for threat scoring, anomaly detection, spam filtering, and prioritizing alerts. In reputation incidents, an algorithm can keep negative material resurfacing long after it was posted, which makes monitoring and response a technical as well as editorial problem.
