Algorithmic recommendation

automated ranking that chooses which content a user sees first.

An algorithmic recommendation is automated ranking that decides which content, account, or message a user sees first. These systems use signals such as past clicks, follows, watch time, location, and inferred interests to predict what is most likely to keep attention. In consumer platforms, that can shape a feed; in security tools, similar ranking logic can prioritize alerts, suspicious events, or help articles.

It matters in cyber security because ranking systems can amplify harmful content as easily as useful content. Attackers try to game recommendations with spam, engagement bait, coordinated posting, or misleading content so their material appears more often and looks more trusted. Defenders watch for abnormal ranking behavior, manipulation of engagement signals, and repeated exposure patterns that may indicate influence operations or fraud. For users, the main risk is opacity: if you cannot tell why something is shown first, it is harder to spot manipulation, compare sources, or control what shapes your attention.
