Algorithmic control

automated decision-making that influences how content is ranked, shown, or distributed.

Algorithmic control is the use of automated decision-making to rank, filter, prioritize, or distribute content. Instead of a person choosing what is shown first or pushed farther, software applies rules, models, or scoring systems to determine visibility and reach. In cyber security, this matters because automated control shapes what users see, what defenders notice, and what malicious content spreads fastest.

Attackers can abuse algorithmic control by gaming ranking systems, flooding feeds with low-quality posts, or tuning content to exploit recommendation logic and moderation gaps. Defenders also rely on it: security tools use algorithms to sort alerts, block suspicious traffic, and surface high-risk events for review. The security challenge is that automated systems can be fast and scalable, but they also hide decision logic and can be manipulated if their inputs, thresholds, or training data are weak. Good practice includes logging decisions, testing for abuse, adding human oversight, and reviewing how the system changes visibility over time.
