Agentless migration

A transfer process that moves workloads without installing software inside each guest VM.

Agentless migration is a transfer method that moves a virtual machine or workload without installing software inside each guest VM. Instead of placing a migration agent on every system, the tool talks to the hypervisor, storage layer, or virtualization API to copy disks and configuration from the outside. This reduces setup work, avoids changing the guest OS, and is often easier to scale across large virtual estates.

In cyber security, agentless design matters because it lowers the number of components that must be trusted and maintained. Fewer in-guest agents can mean a smaller attack surface and fewer compatibility problems during cutover. But the model also concentrates trust in the management plane, credentials, and supporting libraries such as disk access toolkits. If those controls are misconfigured or compromised, an attacker may abuse the same migration paths used by defenders. Security teams should verify permissions, monitor migration activity, and test fallback methods before relying on an agentless workflow.
