An Admin REST API is the programmatic interface used by an identity platform to manage accounts, roles, groups, policies, and other administrative data. In Keycloak, it lets trusted operators and delegated administrators automate tasks such as creating users, updating role mappings, or querying identity records. Because it is exposed over HTTP, it is usually easier to integrate with scripts and internal tools than a web console.
In cyber security, this API matters because it often handles highly sensitive data and privileged actions. If authorization checks are too loose or inconsistent, a restricted admin may be able to list, view, or modify records outside their intended scope. Attackers also target admin APIs for reconnaissance, privilege expansion, and data theft. Defenders should treat these endpoints as high-risk assets: enforce least privilege, verify object-level access checks, log administrative reads and writes, and test that search or list functions do not reveal more than the caller is allowed to see.
