Adaptive Gap describes the distance between what AI systems can do and an organization’s readiness to use them effectively. It is an organizational concept, not a standardized security metric, and there is no established universal method for measuring it. The gap can reflect a lack of suitable workflows, staff training, oversight, or clear accountability.
In cybersecurity, a wide Adaptive Gap can leave AI embedded in business processes without adequate controls. For example, employees may enter sensitive data into unapproved tools, or teams may rely on outputs without review or escalation procedures. Organizations can reduce these risks by setting approved-use rules, controlling access and data retention, assigning responsibility for output review, and monitoring systems and workflows for problems or changes over time.
