Ad platform

a third-party system that may receive browser-level data for advertising or measurement.

An ad platform is a third-party system used to deliver advertising, tracking, or measurement services. In practice, it may receive browser-level data from a website, such as page visits, device details, click events, or identifiers placed by cookies and pixels. Even when the goal is analytics or campaign reporting, the data sent to the platform can include more context than teams expect.

In cyber security, ad platforms matter because they expand the trust boundary. A tracker embedded on a sensitive page can leak personal or account-related information outside the organization, creating privacy, compliance, and governance risk. Attackers may abuse similar third-party integrations to exfiltrate data quietly, while defenders use tag inventories, consent controls, outbound request reviews, and content security policies to limit exposure. The key question is not just whether code works, but whether browser data is being sent to a system that should receive it at all.
