An activation cost is a one-time charge paid when a service, plan, or device is first enabled. In mobile contracts it can make a “cheap” monthly offer more expensive in the first month, because the advertised price does not include the upfront fee. The important metric is the total entry cost, not just the recurring bill.
In cyber security, activation costs matter when organizations compare security tools, mobile access plans, or managed services. A low monthly price can hide setup fees for SIMs, eSIMs, device enrollment, MFA tokens, or support onboarding. Attackers also exploit this pricing confusion by marketing seemingly low-cost offers that pressure users to skip reading the terms. Defenders reduce risk by checking the full first-month cost, validating provisioning steps, and comparing the real cost of deployment before approving a service.
