Account Owner Model

A setup where one primary account controls administration, recovery, and feature access.

An account owner model is a setup where one primary account controls administration, recovery, and feature access for a service or subscription. In practice, the owner account can add users, change settings, manage billing, and recover access if something goes wrong. This design is common in small-business security tools because it keeps setup simple and reduces administrative overhead.

In cyber security, the model matters because it concentrates trust and risk in one identity. If attackers phish the owner account, they may be able to disable protections, steal backups, change recovery details, or lock staff out of the service. Defenders should treat the owner account as a high-value asset: use strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, documented recovery steps, and, where possible, a backup admin account. The goal is to make sure security controls remain usable even if the primary account is compromised or lost.
