Account-based access

A system where use is controlled through a user account rather than only through possession of media.

Account-based access is a control model where a service grants use based on a verified user account, not just possession of a file, disc, device, or other media. The platform checks identity and related entitlements before allowing login, launch, or continued use. In practice, access may depend on passwords, multi-factor authentication, session tokens, and server-side license or policy checks.

This matters in cyber security because the account becomes the main trust boundary. If attackers steal credentials, phish a login, hijack a session, or reuse exposed tokens, they may gain legitimate-looking access without needing the original media. Defenders therefore focus on strong authentication, least privilege, conditional access, entitlement validation, revocation, and monitoring for unusual sign-ins. Account-based access is common in cloud services, software licensing, streaming platforms, and game distribution, where convenience improves but security depends heavily on identity systems and the reliability of the backend that approves access.
