Accidental disclosure

Unintended release of information to people who were not authorized to see it.

Accidental disclosure is the unintended release of information to people who were not authorized to see it. In cyber security, it often happens without malware or a direct breach: a file is uploaded to the wrong location, a sharing link is left public, an email goes to the wrong recipient, or a document contains hidden data that was never removed. Because the exposure is unplanned, it can be easy to overlook until sensitive data has already been copied or indexed.

This matters because unauthorized exposure can still create a personal data breach, trigger compliance duties, and damage trust. In practice, accidental disclosure is common with spreadsheets, backups, cloud storage, and collaborative tools where permissions are complex and change over time. Defenses include least-privilege access, data classification, pre-publication review, link expiration, encryption, and automated checks for public sharing or sensitive content. Security teams also use logging and loss-prevention controls to detect when information has been exposed by mistake.
