Access verification

checking logs and permissions to confirm what actually happened.

Access verification is the process of checking system logs, account permissions, and authentication records to confirm whether a user or attacker really entered a system, and what they could reach. It helps defenders separate rumor from evidence by showing which accounts were used, from where, at what time, and against which files, services, or portals.

In cyber security, this matters because extortion notes and breach claims often overstate what happened. A threat actor may claim to have stolen data, but access verification can reveal whether the session was limited, whether file access was blocked, or whether no data was actually moved. Defenders use it during incident response, account review, and post-attack hardening to validate scope, detect privilege abuse, and identify weak controls such as shared credentials, exposed remote access, or excessive permissions.
