Access separation

limiting who can reach sensitive records or functions.

Access separation is the practice of limiting who can reach sensitive records or functions, and under what conditions. In a healthcare system, that means a receptionist, clinician, database administrator, and support tool should not all have the same visibility into patient data. The goal is to reduce the damage caused by stolen credentials, insider misuse, or a compromised application account.

In cyber security, access separation is a core defense for containing breaches. It is usually implemented with role-based access control, least privilege, network segmentation, and administrative boundaries between systems. When attackers get into one account or service, good separation can prevent them from moving sideways, dumping large databases, or altering critical settings. Poor separation, by contrast, turns a small foothold into broad access to records, exports, or privileged functions. In practice, defenders verify access separation through audits, logging, and regular permission reviews.
