Ablation

The removal of material by a focused energy source.

Ablation is the removal of material by a focused energy source such as a laser, plasma, or another tightly concentrated beam. The process is usually fast enough that the target is stripped away before heat spreads far beyond the spot being hit, which makes it useful when precision matters.

In cyber security, ablation matters because many threats and defenses are physical as well as digital. Attackers may use focused energy to damage chips, remove protective layers, or disable sensors and storage devices. Defenders and researchers use ablation in hardware reverse engineering, failure analysis, and forensic cross-sectioning to expose internal structures and study how a component was built or tampered with. The main risk is collateral damage: if the energy is poorly controlled, it can destroy evidence or alter the device more than intended. Ablation is therefore a reminder that on secure hardware, the way material is removed can be just as important as what is removed.
