2G network

An older mobile standard with weaker security properties than newer cellular generations.

A 2G network is an older generation of cellular service, built before modern security features became common. Compared with 3G, 4G, and 5G, it offers weaker protections for authentication, encryption, and resistance to spoofing. Many phones still keep 2G support for compatibility and as a fallback when newer signals are unavailable.

That fallback behavior matters in cyber security because attackers can try to force a device down to 2G, where monitoring and impersonation are easier. Rogue base stations and downgrade attacks may exploit this weakness to intercept traffic, track devices, or disrupt service. Defenders reduce the risk by disabling 2G where possible, restricting legacy roaming, and preferring newer cellular modes that provide stronger cryptographic and network controls.
