2G

An older mobile standard with weaker security properties than newer cellular generations.

2G is an older generation of mobile network technology. Compared with 3G, 4G, and 5G, it offers weaker security properties, especially around authentication and signaling protections. For that reason, 2G is often treated as a legacy fallback rather than a safe default.

In cyber security, 2G matters because attackers can exploit it to lower a phone’s trust level. A rogue base station or “fake cell tower” may try to force nearby devices to fall back to 2G, where the handset may accept weaker checks and be more vulnerable to interception or message injection. Defenders reduce this risk by disabling 2G where possible, using phishing-resistant authentication, and avoiding SMS as a trusted channel for login or account recovery.
