XOR decoding

a simple transformation sometimes used to reveal hidden configuration data.

XOR decoding is a simple data transformation based on the bitwise XOR operation. In practice, the same operation used to hide data can also reveal it again when the correct key or byte pattern is applied. It is not strong encryption, but it is commonly used to lightly obfuscate strings, configuration blobs, URLs, or embedded commands.

In cyber security, XOR decoding matters because attackers often use it to keep malware settings out of plain sight and to make static analysis harder. A sample may store a C2 address, mutex name, or payload path in XOR-encoded form, then decode it only when the program runs. Defenders reverse this step during malware analysis to recover hidden configuration, understand behavior, and build detections. Security tools may also flag repeated XOR patterns as a sign of packing or simple obfuscation, especially in loaders and scripts.
