XML processing is the code path that reads, validates, and interprets XML-formatted requests or data. Many appliances and management tools use XML because it is structured and easy to automate, but that also makes the parser a security-sensitive component.
In cyber security, XML processing matters because bugs in parsers can become direct attack paths. If the code mis-handles nested tags, oversized fields, or malformed input, an attacker may trigger crashes, memory corruption, or even code execution. In real attacks, XML is often used against administrative interfaces, APIs, and device-management services, where the parser may run with high privileges. Defenders reduce risk by limiting exposure, validating input strictly, patching parser flaws quickly, and isolating management interfaces from untrusted networks.
