xargs

A Unix utility that builds and runs commands from standard input, often used for bulk processing.

xargs is a Unix utility that reads items from standard input and turns them into command-line arguments for another program. It is widely used for bulk processing, such as running one command across many files, paths, or search results. This makes it powerful, but also sensitive to how input is formatted.

In cyber security, xargs matters because automation often processes data that may be incomplete, unexpected, or attacker-controlled. Poorly chosen delimiters, unsafe word splitting, or missing null-separated input handling can cause commands to run on the wrong targets or fail in surprising ways. Defenders use xargs to speed up cleanup, triage, and file handling, but they should pair it with careful quoting, tests, and safe input patterns such as -0 when filenames may contain spaces or special characters. Attackers may try to exploit sloppy bulk-processing scripts to redirect actions, break workflows, or trigger unintended command execution.
