Workload Identity Federation is a way for non-human systems, such as apps, services, CI jobs, or AI agents, to prove who they are by trusting an external identity provider instead of storing a long-lived password, API key, or service account secret. The workload exchanges its external identity for a short-lived credential that can be used to reach a specific cloud or enterprise service.
This matters because static secrets are easy to leak, copy, or reuse. Federation reduces secret sprawl and makes access easier to revoke, scope, and audit. In practice, defenders use it to bind a workload to a role, a resource, and a time limit. Attackers, meanwhile, look for weak trust policies, excessive permissions, or compromised external identities that can be turned into unauthorized access without ever stealing a permanent key.
